Unlock Madeira: Marcia's Insider Tips
Tropical Portuguese Island
For our colleague Marcia Martins, one of the most epic trips do in Portugal is visiting Madeira Island and explore its stunning essence, called “The Pearl of the Atlantic”. We chatted with Marcia about Madeira and the result was 4 Questions, 4 Local Gems!
1. What’s your favorite place on Madeira Island and why?
Fajã dos Padres – becomes "my retreat" on the island, it provides the perfect setting to connect with ourselves, as you’re surrounded by fascinating natural beauty, silence that’s only interrupted by the sound of the waves and dancing wind – is my authentic paradise.
2. The best restaurant on the island? And what should I eat if I go there?
Calhau de S. Jorge - The best restaurant in the north of the island of Madeira! The food is indescribable, you must have fish soup, grilled limpets, and the fabulous oxtail that literally melts in your mouth!
3. Where should I go to drink the best poncha? What makes this place special and unique?
The best location for me is Taberna da Poncha, Serra d ́água - one of the most famous taverns on Madeira Island! The space is very interesting in itself as it’s decorated with various business cards by those who have passed by, and inevitable peanut shells scattered on the floor.
4. What's your favorite “levada”? What makes it unique? The view? A flat spot to do yoga?
Choosing my favorite “levada” is challenging, however, as a hiker lover, I have to choose the Levada from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo. It has the most impressive views, however, it requires a certain level of physical preparation, since it’s a mountain hike (3 hours long) … the best part of the hike is contemplating the 3rd and 1st highest peaks of the island. This “levada” doesn’t have a flat spot but without a doubt I would stretch my Yoga mat at Ponta do Sol, it has the most seductive light during sunset on the island!
