Mesmerizing Vineyards of Penedès Region

Located in the North-East of Spain, Catalonia is a mesmerizing province and home to a few of the most desirable wines in the country. The vineyards not only shape Catalonia landscape but its essence, traditions and historic legacy. About 30 minutes from Barcelona, you can immerse into wine world in five different counties, which make up the Penedès region. Apart from its large wine production, it’s also one of the oldest wine-producing regions in Europe with viniculture dating back to the 6th century.
The famous Cava wine was introduced to Spain by Josep Raventos of the Codorniu winery in 1872 followed by a recent mission to France. Josep returned with the traditional production method but used Spanish grapes instead. The Codorniu Winery is the oldest family business in Spain and one of the oldest in the world with 450 years of history. Being the pioneer of the Cava wine, a visit to its cellars and doing a tasting in its outdoors spaces is a must. The magnificent building was designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, the cellar was declared Historic and Artistic National Monument in 1976. Represents one of the most outstanding examples of modernist architecture in Spain, it has incredible interior and exterior spaces are perfect for meetings, conventions and corporate events.
Another important winery of the region is Freixenet, with more than 150 years of expertise and has three cultivation areas: the coast, flatlands and mountains, each region has its microclimate. Their cellars were built by architects Joan Torras and Josep Ros in 1923, in a Catalan modernist appeal, considered daring at the time. Here, the wine tastings are unique as it can be accompanied by Iberian hams, cheese and even chocolates. Moreover it’s possible to have meetings and corporate events in the surroundings of Freixenet. However there’s another Freixenet property, about 15 minutes away, with capacity of hosting events up to 2.000 people and offering unique activities like tours in e-bikes, 4x4 or super cars between vineyards…
Probably one of the oldest wineries in the region is Can Nadal Boadella, was founded in the early 16th century. A peculiar factor about this winery is since 1943 it cultivates sustainable viticulture and production techniques. Apart from a variety of wine tastings, Finca Nadal, offers unique activities like cycling or segways through the vineyards or a visit to the property and winery on board of a “Mehari” (popular small kind of off road car from the 80’s).
One of the most innovative wineries in the Penedès is Torres; their estate has more than 2,200 acres of vineyards and was founded in 1870, still run by the original founding family. The winery in Penedès is where everything started becoming one of the more historic for the group, having a cellar that’s a perfect example of sustainable architecture. This unique winery offers activities, such as wine tasting, with different wine and food pairings and blind tapas. There are endless locations to host your event within the property, including an auditorium for 118 people and a delicious restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine surrounded by vineyards.
