Melia Hotels International has announced to take over the management of the former Rey Juan Carlos hotel in Barcelona. The property and the adjacent Palacio de Congresos de Cataluna have been closed since 2020.
Meliá Hotels International will open the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya in October 2023 and January 2024 is set as the target date for the hotel, formerly known as Rey Juan Carlos I, which will be renamed Miranda de Pedralbes, by Gran Meliá.

This hotel according to Melia's project, will be "an oasis of tranquility" within the city, both for guests and residents. The project will enhance the link between the hotel and its historic garden with the more than 25,000 meters, bringing light and life to the common areas. Other incredible features are varied gastronomic offer that will incorporate signature restaurants, "all-day dining" proposals, a Jazz Club, a Night Club, and a pool area with views of Barcelona, as well as, a rooftop terrace with 360º views of the city. Not to mention, its 391 rooms and suites (65 in total) of various typologies.

The new Palau de Congressos de Catalunya "will provide a new infrastructure with the most modern facilities and equipment, with Meliá's experience in all types of events and its expertise in sustainable events". It will have 39 rooms of various sizes, an Auditorium with capacity for more than 2,000 people, and more than 4,000 square meters of spaces for Fairs and Exhibitors.
