From April 12 to 16, 2026, the city of Évora, Portugal, will host the 31st General Meeting of the European Grassland Federation (EGF). This prestigious international event is expected to welcome 350–450 participants including scientists, young farmers, students, and professionals working in the field of grassland and forage sciences.
The central theme – “Challenges and Innovations for Grasslands Resilience” – addresses the urgent need to adapt grassland systems to global changes, highlighting both challenges and the innovative strategies that can foster sustainability and resilience.



A comprehensive scientific program

The General Meeting will feature plenary, parallel, and poster sessions, complemented by five mid-conference technical tours, social events, and a conference dinner. A post-conference tour will also be offered.

Key scientific areas include:

  • - Climate change and grasslands: adaptation strategies, carbon sequestration, soil and water management, and new technologies.

  • - Agroforestry, pastoralism, and society: the role of grasslands in sustainable farming systems, animal welfare, biodiversity, and the evolving role of pastoralism.

  • - Breeding for new challenges: innovative plant species, breeding strategies for climate adaptation, emission reduction, and genetic diversity.

  • - Sustainable livestock production systems: grassland-based management, ecosystem services, precision livestock farming, protein self-sufficiency, and product labelling.

  • - Grasslands and rural policy tools: public policies, eco-schemes, and resilience strategies to support agricultural systems.
     

These discussions will provide a platform for knowledge exchange and innovation, bringing together perspectives from research, practice, and policy.
