As you’re gliding along the downtown coast, take your time to observe the beauty of the impressive and historic architecture, as you paddle by the University of Tampa and its iconic tower buildings. Apart from observing the city’s beauty, you might have a few encounters with wintering manatees and dolphins in the river, and an impressive variety of birds and fishes.
About 20 minutes from Tampa is Hillsborough River State Park, a perfect location to spend the day, especially if you’re a fan of canoeing and kayaking. This park has 16,000 acres of unspoiled forest and floodplains, on board of a canoe or kayak we’ll discover the wildness of the park, see incredible species of birds, pop-up turtles, lazy alligators and the occasional manatee on a two hour or a full day ride downstream. For those, who wish to stay on land, the park has unique trails amid serene surroundings, where you’ll also have the chance to observe these animals. Finally, being close to Hillsborough river, bring your fishing gear; the most popular species caught here are Largemouth bass, Common Snook, and Red drum.
