Unique Combinations on the Outskirts of Lisbon

Ericeira and Gradil

The outskirts of Lisbon can offer intriguing and unique combinations of seaside and countryside locations that will surely enrich your visit.  About 40 minutes Northeast from Lisbon, lays a picturesque fishermen village called Ericeira, its history dates back to the 12th century and until today its historical quarter still safeguards its heritage and charm with its cobblestone streets.

It is said that the name Ericeira comes from “Ouriceira” which comes from “Ouriço” meaning sea urchin, until today you can find sea urchins by the beaches and rocks around here.  It’s possible to visit the caves of local grower of sea urchins, where you’ll learn how to pick and open them, and taste it straight away! On the other hand, you can have a lovely seafood lunch overlooking the ocean, where you’ll be able to taste a few dishes the locals make with sea urchins.

Ericeira is also the “Surf Mecca” of Portugal, as well as, being the only World Surfing Reserve in Europe since 2011, hosting at least one of the World’s Surfing championships here every year.  Hence, it’s a must to have at least one surf class during your stay! There are a few beaches to choose from and get the thrilling feeling of riding a wave. For those with a strong surfer vein, there’s a distinct workshop with Nick Uricchio, the best surfboard shaper in Portugal, where you can learn with him the process of making your dream surfboard.

For a rural feeling, about 20 minutes from Ericeira is Quinta de Santana, a historic family wine estate dedicated to the production of top quality wines and the property can also be used as a venue. Their magnificent view allows our eyes to wonder across the village of Grandil, where white washed houses are mixed with the stunning coulisse of vineyards, ancient olive trees and cypresses. This property has a few hidden treasures starting by an astonishing chapel from 1633, a beautiful statue of Saint Anne and typical hand-painted ceramic tiles called Azulejos. During a day here, you can immerse into the world of wine with unique activities, get your hands dirty by making your own bread, olive oil tasting and even surrender yourself to the rhythm of the Portuguese folklore.

Returning to Ericeira, a unique location to spend the night is Vila Galé Ericeira, a beautiful 4 stars property situated atop of a cliff with 202 rooms. This historical hotel from the 50’s was recently remodeled without losing its sassiness. It has a delicious restaurant, two bars, two swimming pools, array of meeting rooms for your corporate event and a modern spa. Not to mention this property is located by World Surfing Reserve in Europe…
